I would say, “Happy Memorial Day weekend, for those of us in the United States, but it’s supposed to be more of a solemn remembrance for our fallen servicemembers than a celebration. I know there’s a lot of anti-military sentiment out there, and with approximately 1,304,447 people dying in wars and campaigns in this country, I can kind of see why, but I can’t forget the sacrifices many of them have made for my freedoms and for the freedoms of others around the world. These sacrifices were selfless, asking nothing in return, reminding me of this part of “America the Beautiful”:
“O beautiful for heroes proved
In liberating strife,
Who more than self their country love
And mercy more than life.”
And for that, I honor them.
